<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - I opened the 2023 year with Where Things Touch: A Meditation on Beauty by Bahar Orang, which provided me with a literary soundtrack for a tumultuous year, encouraging me to find beauty in the difficult. In this “part lyric essay, part prose poem,” Orang uses her lived experience as a medical student, a lover, and a person to source definitions of beauty.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - I started the year off in a bit of slump, preferring to read collections of poetry to the daunting task of tackling a novel and it led me to three of my now favourite books. The first was Natasha Kanapé Fonatine’s Bleuets et abricots, which was so beautifully written that I couldn’t have started the year off on a better note. I then read Exhibitionist by Molly Cross-Blanchard (I borrowed this book from flo. EiC Senka and loved it so much that I got my own copy!) which was so unabashedly real and honest that it both made me blush and laugh out loud! Another fantastic collection of poetry I picked up this year was Monoculture by Sue Goyette, which considers the ways in which we interact with nature and what that means for the future (I highly recommend for anyone interested in eco critical poetry!).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - My favourite book this year was Cherie Dimaline’s Empire of Wild, which was probably the first mystery novel I’ve ever voluntarily read! It was an incredible blend of traditional storytelling and modern technology that was so engaging, it rekindled my love for fiction! It is closely followed by my love for Waubgeshig Rice’s Moon of The Turning Leaves, my most highly-anticipated read of the year and sequel to Moon of The Crusted Snow (one of my all time faves!). It did NOT disappoint! I won’t give any spoilers, but it was the perfect way to end the series (I cried…a lot!).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - The most notable task I challenged myself with this year was to read more in French and I’m so glad I did. I finally read Kukum, which had been sitting on my bookshelf since 2020, and my only regret is that I hadn’t read it sooner! It was so beautifully written and I felt totally immersed in Almanda’s world! Another favourite was Em by Kim Thúy, which looked back on untold stories from the American War in Vietnam. It was heartbreaking and moving, but so incredibly eye-opening to a rarely discussed history.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - I’ve been trying my best this year to catch up on the hype for the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and have made her my most read author of 2023. The series is just okay but the prequel series, Flesh and Fire, is positively delicious.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - As for Me and My House by Sinclair Ross featured in a previous blog post. I will rave about this novel until the day I die. I read it almost a year ago, but the story and the writing is still so fresh in my mind that it feels like I read it last week. It’s definitely the book that has made me think the most this year and I cannot recommend it enough.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler was my favourite book this year. The imagery and detail in description was both lovely and horrifying as the novel is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - • The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins — As with The Catcher in the Rye, I reread The Hunger Games for a course on YA lit. I realized that a lot of it went over my head in middle school, including Collins’ exploration of just war theory. I’m also surprised by how badly I misinterpreted Katniss, who I used to intensely dislike! I’m wrapping up Catching Fire (only about 30 pages to go) and plan on eating the third book soon so I can check out the prequel.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - • The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater — During the pandemic April of 2020, I organized a competitive team readathon and ploughed through 23 books. The Raven Boys was one of them. I peer-pressured my Mom into reading the whole series so we could discuss it. Unfortunately for our ill-fated buddy read, I didn’t follow suit until this year. I love how tangible and strange the characters are, how Welsh mythology interacts with the witchy women of 300 Fox Way and their unsettling tarot readings, and how languid, spooky vibes permeate everything.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Goodreads Wrapped: A Year in Review - • Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama—Whenever I stayed home sick from school growing up, my ritual was cozying up under a red blanket, eating soup, and watching movies like Kiki’s Delivery Service. <image:caption>To kick off the new year, I decided to read a book with a lot of buzz: Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died. Surprisingly blunt and candid for a celebrity memoir, reading McCurdy’s book felt like a long heart to heart with an old friend over many, many cups of tea. Though not sobbing-on-the-floor sad or laugh-out-loud funny, this memoir is sure to make you shed a tear and embarrassingly nose snort chuckle. This book pairs well with a classic London fog—earl grey, frothed milk, and vanilla. Comforting, but strong enough to keep you up at night because it’s hard to put this book down! rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>I started off the new year with a book that I placed on hold at the Ottawa Public Library so long ago that I couldn’t even remember what it was or why I wanted to read it: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini knows how to hook you into the story and uses literary devices to his benefit. The storyline is sad—I cried at least thrice—but possibly to the point of falling under the category of “trauma porn”. Nevertheless, it’s a book worth reading as long as it is approached with an appropriate level of critical thinking. I would recommend reading this book alongside something fruity, like apricot tea, to provide you with some much needed emotional support as you read. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>School has given me a new appreciation and honest joy for classic literature. For a Canadian Literature class we were asked to read As For Me and My House by Sinclair Ross and I devoured the deeply rich characters and landscape of the novel in no time at all. There is something so gloomy and and yet so succulent about the way Sinclair Ross writes. His use of unreliable narrator paired with the diary format of the book was a wonderful way of tucking little secrets and intricacies between the words making it a novel that can be read over and over again without becoming tedious or stagnant. I would pair this book with a classic green tea. Something bitter but still fresh and enjoyable. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>With the winter semester in full swing at Carleton University, I’ve been struggling to find time to read for leisure. Nevertheless, I keep a book of poetry on my nightstand to pick away at before bed when I’m not too exhausted. Recently, I’ve started reading Ocean Vuong’s collection of poetry Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Vuong’s voice and style inspires me to learn how to articulate my deepest emotions and memories into poetry, as he does it so eloquently and with such grace. I’ve paired my go-to breakfast tea with this book to keep me energized for the day: Tealyra’s English Breakfast blend is one of my greatest comforts through busy weeks, as it both keeps me awake and never fails to brew a tasty and comforting cuppa. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>I've been absolutely loving dark academia lately, and in keeping with this interest my most recent read was M.L. Rio’s If We Were Villains. Full of drama, intrigue, and enough Shakespeare to make my bardic heart weep with joy, If We Were Villains explores the intricacies of friendship and trust, and the dangers of obsession. A murder mystery told through acts much like a Shakespearean play, Rio kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I would pair this book with a cozy Chai hot chocolate: warm and familiar, unassuming, but with a hidden kick. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>This month, amidst all the holiday spending, I resisted the urge to buy new books and pulled a collection of poetry off my bookshelf that had been waiting to be read for months. Natasha Kanapé Fontaine’s Bleuets et abricots paints such vivid image of her grappling with loss of land and culture that reading her poetry is almost a tactile and tastable experience. Her honest and raw exploration of self through prose is gently heartbreaking and painfully beautiful. Though blueberry or apricot tea would have been fitting, I have been sipping a spiced orange tea all holiday season to keep warm and cozy despite the ravaging snowstorm and holiday madness. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>As the winter blues hit and I find it increasingly more difficult to pick up (much less finish) a book, Benjamin Labatut’s When We Cease to Understand the World reminded me that at least I’m not a mathematician. Interweaving fact and fiction, Labatut creates his own version of history as he explores the lives of many of the mathematicians, physicists, and scientists that contributed to quantum physics. I cannot in good faith recommend a tea for this book knowing that it is best enjoyed with a double espresso: if the caffeine doesn’t make you bounce off the walls, the book will. rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>The month of December was very busy for me. Between exams, work, and holiday festivities I had very little time to read for pleasure. I did, however, manage to squeeze in a Christmas themed read by Maggie Knox titled All I Want For Christmas which was in all honesty a bit of a let down. It was sweet but it was also immensely frustrating and both the plot and characters weren’t very memorable. My tea of choice for the month is peppermint which pairs quite nicely with my December read. . rating:</image:caption>

<image:caption>I spent December reading quite a few things, but the most notable of my growing pile of books was Beast at Every Threshold by Natalie Wee. The collection of poetry features a vivid introspective of grief, identity, and memory as Wee explores what it means to be "other." Diaspora, Queerness, language, and loss of self are just a few of the themes she depicts in an attempt to define her experience as a "shapeshifter" in a world she constantly must adapt to. Additionally, I found myself trying lots of new tea this month, my favourite being high mountain oolong. It is a transformative tea that takes on completely new flavour characteristics depending on how you prepare it. With a bit of sugar, I'm reminded of wildflowers and springtime. rating:</image:caption>

I always find comfort in Goto’s practice of storytelling that spans across generations, languages and cultures. <image:caption>I picked up Bahar Orang’s Where Things Touch: A Meditation on Beauty at the Ottawa Small Press Book Fair a few weekends ago. Published by Book*hug Press in 2020, Where Things Touch weaves together notions of self, other, and the abject to source a vocabulary with which to define beauty. Orang continually reimagines this vocabulary as she grapples with her experiences as a human, a lover, and a student of medicine. This book gently reminded me to consider what exists in between the language; in between the things we think we understand. I would recommend reading (and rereading) Where Things Touch with a ginger tea to alleviate the existential motion sickness Orang’s poetry may induce. rating:</image:caption>

Up until the middle of November I had strictly been reading for school which seemed to only pull me deeper into my slump. I needed something light and easy. I needed something happy. So I picked up Heartstopper by Alice Oseman and devoured all 4 volumes in 3 days. It’s a story I would have loved to have growing up and I’m so incredibly thankful it exists. Lavender tea sweetened with honey is the perfect drink to sip while reading (or watching) Heartstopper. The tea is calm and soothing just like the characters, relationships, and artwork featured in this story. rating:</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Tea Time with flo. - Jen—poetry first reader</image:title>
<image:caption>As November draws to a close and winter blankets the sky with a cold, grey haze, I find myself falling back on familiarity—stories and tastes that warm my heart no matter how many times I experience them. I just finished rereading Faraway's collection of poetry, Sad Birds Still Sing. It is a book I always come back to when I need to be reminded of all the healing and warmth that can be found from within. With that in mind, I have been gravitating towards the most comforting teas I have in my pantry! Moondrop Dreams is a rooibus tea blend from the British indie tea shop Bird & Blend. It is a dreamy medley of lemon, lavender, rosehip, and sweet rooibus tea. A cup of this tea and a few pages of this book create a perfect combination for a cozy and comforting night in. rating:</image:caption>
